Sick of Elves and Dragons?

Is fantasy fiction on the cusp of a revolution?  Are its tired old tropes and cliches nearing their end?   Do the genre and its sub-genres need to be redefined, renamed, reinvented?   Is there a distinctly American style of fantasy fiction, and if so, what should it be called?

A great discussion involving the future of fantasy fiction has sprung up at the SFReader.com forum, and these are just some of the questions on the table.  Authors, editors, and readers alike are bouncing some great ideas around, but more opinions and insights are most welcome, so please join the conversation.
